Beginner’s Guide to Vibrators

Buying your first vibrator is a milestone in life, much like passing your driving test, voting for the first time, or having your first drink. I suppose the difference is that when you vote or walk into a pub, you’re not faced with thousands of choices like you are with the vibrator market!

So, why do you need a beginner’s guide to vibrators? Well, buying your first vibrator is a milestone in life, much like passing your driving test, voting for the first time, or having your first drink. I suppose the difference is that when you vote or walk into a pub, you’re not faced with thousands of choices like you are with the vibrator market!

So, that raises the question: just how do you choose one? Well, that’s the million-dollar question, and in this guide, I will walk you through the main points to consider when buying your first vibrator. First, try to identify the type of pleasure you enjoy.

I realise that sounds contradictory, but when I say that, I mean that, as women, we all know what pleasure we like. I’m very much the clitoral type; internal penetration does very little for me other than make me think about next week’s shopping and whether I need to add sausages to the list!

1) Target Area: Once you’ve decided whether you want a clitoral, internal, or both at the same time, consider your budget. As tempting as it might be to splash out a hundred or so pounds on the latest Womazier air pulse vibe and relax into a night of orgasmic bliss, I understand that not everyone (me included) is in that financial position. So, once you’ve set your budget, there will be a few key things you want to look for in your first vibrator. If you would rather not commit to a single style straight away, a beginner-friendly sex toy kit gives you a few different sensations to try in one box.

2) Material type, this is really important. You’ll have a choice of silicone, ABS plastic, and other materials. It’s best to exercise some caution here; the last thing you want is to discover you’re allergic to your new toy. Medical-grade silicone is a very good option when wiring on the side of caution; very few people are allergic to it, which is why it’s used extensively in hospitals. It’s easy to clean and doesn’t hold onto bacteria.

3) Power type. Again, this is important; the last thing you want is to open your drawer, take out your toy, and find it’s as dead as a doornail. It basically comes down to two choices: replaceable batteries, like AA or AAA, or internal batteries with USB charging. Personally, I favour USB because I know I can plug it in to charge anytime, and within half an hour or so, it’s ready to take me to new heights of pleasure. Should I demand more from it, a couple of hours later, it’s back to full power and ready to go again!

So, this leaves you with several options. Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, the toy type you choose will largely come down to the type of pleasure that does it for you!

  • Bullet vibrators are a personal favourite of mine. As I mentioned earlier, internal penetration does very little for me; I prefer clitoral stimulation, and that’s exactly where a bullet vibe delivers! They’re small enough to fit in a purse or handbag, quiet enough to use at home with others nearby if you use it under the duvet, and they come with a variety of vibration patterns that do exactly what you’d expect. A bullet vibrator is a great starting point for any toy collection, and it will certainly eliminate dull solo moments or be equally at home, adding extra pleasure during sex with a partner or during dildo play!
  • G-Spot Vibrators are quite easy to use, but they don’t have an effect on some women, while other women rave about G-spot stimulation. They work because of the curved design, which is designed to press against the G-Spot, which is situated inside the vagina about 2cm up directly behind the pubic bone. Medical professionals report that the G-Spot is basically the back of the clitoris and contains up to 10,000 nerve endings, hence being the epicentre of pleasure.
  • Clit Sucking Vibrators: These are a relatively new addition to the scene in the last 5 years, and trust me, they don’t disappoint! Less intense than a bullet vibrator, they operate by delivering pulses of air pressure or a gentle sucking sensation on the clit that mimics oral sex. Noise-wise, they’re not quite as discreet as a bullet vibe under the duvet, as they tend to amplify sound and can make gargling noises as moisture increases and pleasure intensifies. Some air pulse sex toys come in amusing shapes like a penguin or rose, but they all basically do the same thing, and they do it really, really well! If you like clitoral stimulation, you’re definitely going to want to try one of these!
  • Couples’ vibrators, a self-explanatory term, are vibrators designed for use within a couple’s relationship. They tend to be smaller than standard vibrators, so they don’t interfere with two entwined bodies. They come in various shapes, with some providing pleasure to both partners when worn by the male. Long-distance vibrators have also become a popular choice for couples in recent years; these are great fun and pair with a mobile phone with an internet connection, allowing your partner to control your toy via an app, which is tremendously fun! If you haven’t tried it, I’d recommend you do!
  • Finger Vibrators: These useful little devices slip over your finger and add a modern twist to traditional “by hand” masturbation! They are small and very discreet, making them a great choice for complete beginners. There is a variety of styles available, from textured to smooth and curved for gentle insertion. The only thing I would add is that feedback provided to us is that with prolonged use, the tip of your finger can become a bit numb and tingly, but for some, that’s quite a nice bonus, as it feels more like someone else is playing with you and a massive win; they’re not very noisy!
  • Wand vibrators, where do I start? Most probably with OMG! It depends on your tolerance for deep, rumbly vibrations, but wow, just wow, these will truly rock your world. Be warned, they aren’t very quiet, so don’t be surprised if your neighbour pops round and asks you to stop drilling the walls! However, what they lack in discretion, they massively make up for in power. If quick, brutal, powerful orgasms are your thing, this is most definitely the vibrator for you! They are available with USB battery power or mains electricity. Obviously, the benefit of mains is that it will keep going as long as you need, but I’m yet to meet anyone who can handle more than half an hour! Be prepared: accidental squirting isn’t unheard of with wands, so make sure you’re ready for all eventualities and have a towel nearby!
  • Vibrating underwear is brilliant and very discreet if public naughtiness is your thing! There’s nothing quite like sitting in a busy pub while your partner takes you to the edge and back multiple times. I wouldn’t recommend using one in your local library; despite being discreet, they’re not completely silent and, quite frankly, your face will give it away! They work by being placed inside the panties, with a small magnet on the outside to keep the toy in place against your clit. If your date nights are getting a bit repetitive, this will definitely liven them up!

So that covers the most common vibrators available at The Loving company, but at the end of the day, it comes down to several factors, like personal preference, anatomy, and sensitivity and for most of us part of the fun is trying new ones as and when we can but I’m sure if you were to ask any woman what her favourite was, it would be the journey and the excitement of receiving a new toy and the anticipation building up when getting to try it! If you’re still unsure after reading this, reach out to me with any questions, and I will share my experiences with you!
